The Swedish Aquila Formula Nova driver won two of the weekend’s races, whilst Rosanne den Drijver secured her second overall heat victory in the fourth round of the Nordic 4 Championship at Sturup Raceway.
Olson and his compatriot Jonathan Öhlander started the weekend’s first heat from the front row, but Matteis Stigsen quickly moved up to second place, whilst his STEP Motorsport team-mate, Rosanne den Drijver, put pressure on Öhlander from fourth place. The battle behind Olson meant that he was able to build up a comfortable lead with little effort and secure the weekend’s first victory.
On Sunday, things were immediately more difficult for the Swede. With the top six from Saturday’s race starting in reverse order, Janine Wermuth and Milla Sjöstrand found themselves on the front row when Race 2 got underway. It didn’t last long, however, as a small storm of riders came charging up from behind, heading for the front. Rosanne den Drijver took the lead and held on to it firmly, even though Richard Olson tried several times to get past the Dutchwoman after fighting his way up through the field.
In the weekend’s final heat, Richard Olson got off to a poor start and had to spend the first lap of the race catching up with and overtaking an otherwise well-riding Matteis Stigsen. The Swede then pulled away, helped considerably by the STEP sandwich that Jonathan Öhlander had found himself in whilst running third. Throughout the race, there was a close battle between him and Rosanne den Drijver, whilst Matteis Stigsen took advantage of the duel behind him to build up a lead – and make a serious attempt to reduce Olson’s lead at the front.
With his one-two finish at Sturup Raceway, Richard Olson is now the leader in the Nordic 4 Championship, just one point ahead of Matteis Stigsen, who in turn leads both the B Division and the Rookie Championship.
The next race in the Nordic 4 Championship will take place at Kinnekulle Ring in Sweden on 25–26 July.
